Using foreign documents in Mauritius

Authentication in the country of origin

If the document comes from a country that is party to the Apostille Convention, it is generally authenticated with an apostille issued in that country. If not, it must be legalised by that country's authorities and by the Mauritian embassy or consulate responsible for it. Translation into English or French

Mauritian authorities work in English and French. A document in any other language – Chinese, Arabic, Hindi, German, Russian, Spanish and so on – needs a certified translation into English or French. Some authorities also accept or request documents in only one of the two languages, so check the instructions of the office concerned.

Typical cases

• Work and residence permits: degrees, police clearance certificates, birth and marriage certificates, proof of funds.
• Getting married in Mauritius: birth certificates, proof of single status, divorce judgments or death certificates of former spouses.
• Property and investment: powers of attorney, company documents, bank references.
• Inheritance: death certificates, wills, certificates of inheritance and family records.
