How to get an apostille in Mauritius

1. Check that your destination country accepts apostilles

An apostille is only valid in countries that are party to the 1961 Hague Apostille Convention. Mauritius is a member, as are France, the United Kingdom, India, China, South Africa, Canada, Australia and more than 120 other countries. For countries outside the Convention – such as the United Arab Emirates or Qatar – you need consular legalisation instead.

2. Make sure the document is a public document

Apostilles are placed on public documents: civil status certificates, court documents, documents issued by a ministry or public body, and notarial deeds. A private document – a letter, a contract, a private company's certificate – can often be apostilled once it has been signed before or certified by a notary.

3. Obtain any prior certification

Some documents cannot be apostilled as they are. Educational documents usually need to be verified by the issuing institution or the competent authority first, and copies must be certified as true copies. The document must be original (or a certified copy), legible and in good condition, with clear stamps and signatures.

4. Submit the document to the competent authority

The apostille is issued by the competent Mauritian authority designated under the Convention. Procedures, fees and processing times are set by the authorities and may change, which is why we check them for each file.

5. Translate the document – before or after?

Many countries require a certified translation of the document and of the apostille. Some want the translation made after the apostille so that it covers both; others require the translation to be done by a translator sworn in the destination country. Always check this before ordering the translation.

6. Send the document to its destination
